So many firsts...

To a new mom, there is a never-ending list of firsts to be had, some of them unexpected. Many of them exciting, but even still, some unwanted. This week has been a storm of chaos while my parents struggle to move into their new home so that they may be only half an hour away rather than 3 hours drive. The struggle part is that they sold their home Friday but have still not been able to nail down a closing for their new home. This was initially decided upon, however due to the seller having a few financial blunders this has caused confusion and delay (any Thomas the Tank engine fans out there? We use these references often lately). My parents have been staying at the house here in the meantime, getting crosser with each passing day that the closing is put off. Where do all these baby firsts come in, you may be asking? Well, to start with, the hubs and I let him go to the Church nursery for the hour service for the first time. This was a painful separation for us all, but a necessary step for him to get socialized. Also, later in the day, in an effort to keep themselves busy, we all (mom, dad, myself, the hubs, the little prince and my brother-in-law and his betrothed and their little one) went out to dinner to a Chinese buffet where Isaac got to sit in a high chair for the first time. Successful and cute...he also tried jello and spat it right out. It was funny, really. I believe it was also this weekend that I brushed his teeth for the first time and he bit me HARD. I hope he gets used to the brushing and doesn't bite me every time. Ouch. We decided to make mashed potatoes for the baby to try for the first time. He gagged. We will have to doctor it up for the next try so that he will hopefully like it. We went to the Zoo yesterday, a BIG first for him that he will not remember, but we will. He seemed excited by all the new sights and smells, and he got to touch a sheep who was clearly too hot to move away. Then, this morning in the wee early hours, he got his first fever. I was awake slightly and noticed he seemed warm, but decided that it was just my imagination since he was sleeping and didn't seem bothered. Then when he fussed and the hubs woke up, we decided to take his temp and he was high. To me it was worthy of mild concern; to the hubs he was ready to pack up and go to the ER. 100.6 was the final recording, so we removed his PJs and put him in something lighter. Gave him some Tylenol, a drink of Pedialyte and applied a cold cloth to him as long as he would let me. Then I cuddled up with him in the bigger bed and he fell back to sleep, as did I. He woke an hour later felling a bit damp from perspiration, but he felt much cooler. He did not seem to behave like he was sick, so we went about the day as usual. But I am on pins and needles worried that the fever will return. He is still running a slight increase to normal, but I am watching him closely and he seems OK. My sweet little prince is very sleepy today too, so I wonder if he maybe got a little heat stroke from the zoo adventure yesterday since it was very hot out. More firsts to come this week when mom and dad do finally close and move in and he gets to visit for the first time. I suppose they will get him a booster chair too, and maybe a baby gate. He also tried standing and climbing up things. OH I ALMOST FORGOT! He went skinny dipping for the first time yesterday to cool off from the zoo and he LOVED it. Next week he will try meat for the first time, and finger foods will be encouraged more actively every dy so he can feed himself. He does it sometimes already, but I don't make a federal case out of it so it isn't a habit like it should be. Anyway, with all these firsts, I look forward to a nice rest to recover for the next round.
